History
The town of Pittsboro was officially established in 1785, and like many communities in the English-settled land, has a long history of British influence. It was made the county seat, and was named after William Pitt the Younger, the son of William Pitt, First Earl of Chatham, whom Chatham County was named after.
In 1881, a new brick courthouse was built in the town square for $10,666. The Classical Revival brick building was restored to its original appearance in 1991, and functions as the aesthetic heart of Pittsboro’s Historic District. In 2010, the historic courthouse was severely damaged in a fire, but the town immediately authorized its reconstruction. The courthouse officially reopened in 2013.
